1.1.12 Cash Converters

The state of the country is no better exemplified than by Cash Converters.  It's not just the actual existence of the shop in the first place, which is perhaps indication enough that times are hard.  No, it's the deals that are being offered inside that take things to a new level.  Not satisfied with offering (predominantly) second hand goods at bargain prices, the establishment has introduced a facility to pay over six months.

I hear your mind ticking over now, wondering why interest-free payments over six months might be weird.  I agree, it is common practice these days - but Cash Converters is not quite Argos, is it!  However, the real point here is the amount one has to spend to benefit from this facility.  It seems that there is no minimum.

That's right, I stuck my head in at the local shop for the first time, and was amazed at the things on offer - but not as amazed at them as at the payment terms.  Here's an example:

Three-Way Travel Shaver - Deposit £1.02 followed by six monthly payments of 66p

Are things so serious now that a bloke has to pay for a shaver over six months, at 66p per month?  How on earth is it worth the time and hassle for Cash Converters to set up a payment plan for this type of transaction, a shaver for a whole £4.98?
Quite simply mad.
