5.7.14 World Cup Quarter Finals

Argentina v Belgium

What a complete let down.  This match was only one level above 'boring' and it was not worth the investment of almost two hours of my time.  I have so little to say about this match, because it was pretty dreadful.  Belgium were absolutely lethargic and shit, meaning that Argentina were able to win by being marginally better.  The only interest came from, of all people, the commentating pundit on ITV - Clarke Carlisle.  He said: "There's Fellaini doing what he does best" while we were all watching a replay of Fellaini elbowing an opponent in the face.  1-0 to Argentina, NOT my favourite team at all, and yet I would have been so unhappy if the slouching and useless uninspiring Belgians had got through to the Semi-Final.  The real shame is that Belgium ousted the USA in the Quarter-Final, and if the USA had got through to play Argentina, we would have been assured a fantastic effort all round!

Fellaini, for once not using an elbow

Netherlands v Costa Rica

Whilst this was an even contest in terms of the result, getting to the end of normal time with no goals scored, it was still very frustrating to see such a poor quality performance from Holland.  I did not know that Robin Van Persie was capable of being so fucking incapable in a game of football; poor show.  Of some real concern was the bad luck experienced by Costa Rica.

27 minutes - Martins Indi held the shirt of a Costa Rica player and was not seen doing so - Penalty!

60 minutes - Push by Martins Indi in the penalty area - Penalty!

63 minutes - Blatant block by Martins Indi, earning him a Yellow Card

Extra Time

7 minutes - Vlaar trips a Costa Rica player in the penalty area - Penalty!

10 minutes - Foul by Martins Indi, worthy of a second Yellow Card = Red Card!
26 minutes - Costa Rica came so, so close to a winning goal!
28 minutes - Holland hit the bar!
31 minutes - Tim Krul comes on to replace the Dutch keeper with seconds to go.

Penalties

Tim Krul displayed some cheap shots in trying to interfere with the penalty takers; he should have received a Yellow Card.  As it was, he made two saves, and sadly the result went Holland's way.

There were two Costa Rica penalties in normal time, and another in extra time - none was given.  It is in this knowledge that I say there was a lot of luck going Holland's way tonight.
