9.6.12 Ukraine Boycott

What a load of complete two-faced shit from twats in high positions, regarding the boycott.  It seems that the UK Government is snubbing group matches over human rights issues, and violations in Ukraine.  The official comment is:

"No ministers will be attending group games at Euro 2012.  We're keeping attendance at later stages under review in the light of ministers' busy schedules and widespread concerns about selective justice and the rule of law in Ukraine."

This is pathetic.  If there is such concern (probably totally correctly) on these issues, then it's simply mandatory in my cunting opinion that ministers boycott the whole thing.  It would be no great loss if none was there, and it would at least show some consistent thought.  However, to start muddying the waters by claiming there will be a review as we go along for later games, as a result of ministers' schedules is complete bollocks.  They are either available to go or they are not.  They either want to go or they do not.  They either object to the regime and the justice issues, or they do not.  If they turn up half way through because we've got past the group stage, that would be pure hypocrisy!

Is there now no cunt in the Government who stands for anything, or someone who is definite about anything?  All I seem to see these days is dithering and fucking having it both ways.  If human rights are a real concern, why the fuck is the team even playing in Ukraine, then?  But before getting to that question, the main one must surely be (in light of government ministers from Germany, France and the UK boycottings matches)  -

Why the fuck did Ukraine get the nod to part-host the competition?

8.6.12 Local Paper

I have got hold of a copy of a local paper - you know the sort, available free of charge (sometimes from certain shops or business premises, and sometimes posted through the letterbox).  I thought I'd share with you some of the very many errors contained within.  I realise it's a free publication, but whether it's paid for or not, the production of a newspaper in England in English should benefit from slightly better checking before going to print.

ADVERTS

The cost of producing the paper is clearly met by advertisers, so one might expect that the adverts would be fairly accurate.  I am not sure whose responsibility it is to check things.  It could be the editor's job, or a proof reader, or it could simply be the company placing the advert that's at fault.  Here are some of the faux pas and typing errors found within adverts for events, products and services.

Car Servicing
On the front page, a local garage has decided to advertise and take a quarter-page to promote various services, including MOTs.  I noticed the printed version said MOT'S and the highlighted offer highlighted the inappropriate apostrophe.  I suspect few will be that bothered, but I am one of them.

UPVC
Whilst it's not essential, what with there being a phone number and a road name, you'd think that the address of an advertiser might include the postcode.  It seems not, based on a company selling UPVC.  This adverts omits the postcode, but manages also to spell the town name wrongly - Sketon instead of Skelton.  There is further annoyance created by the opening/closing times including '12pm' which does not exist!

Need Glasses?
One would hope that an advert for an optician might not have letters in the wrong order, but unfortunately I found prescription spelt "perscription".  I am sorry, but that is rather worrying, because I'd want the company to have an eye for detail, and the word 'prescription' is hardly alienn to the staff, considering every fucker needs one to determine what glasses or contacts lenses will be needed!

Hair
The double page feature / advert for a hairdressing salon includes details of the staff and their roles.  I was especially taken with the job description - "Fashion Forecaster" and I worry what the world is coming to when such a role is warranted.  There is a small section headed "Top tips for blondes" and I expected to see some jokes below.  Unfortunately the senior colour technician mentioned some Do's and Dont's - so on the language side, Karen is hardly very technical.  First, there is inconsistency, because she has adopted a weird approach for making the two words plural.  Adding the letter S is all that's needed for both words.  So, the apostrophe on her Do's heading is not needed.  As for the other word, I am struggling to understand how she has not only decided to add an apostrophe before the letter S, she's gone and removed the apostrophe for the missing O in don't.  The end result of Dont's is simply ludicrous.  Other annoyances include silly paragraphs dotted about the pages, headed "Trend Alert".  What bollocks.  Finally, under a heading "What's your colour?" I am outraged within just a few words.  "If you're fancying a colour change, . . .".  There is no fucking need - stick to 'If you fancy' not the pretentious shit of a phrase 'If you're fancying'.

Property
Seven pages are devoted to Parker Stag.  Its maintenance division has a full page which gives details of the different disciplines it can cope with.  For double Glazing, there is clarification that this includes Windows, Doors, Soffitts and Fascias.  I don't trust any fucker to sort out my soffits if he cannot even spell it properly.

Aerials
Not much to say about this advert; just two things.  The plural of TV is TV's apparently, rather than the correct version of TVs.  The last line for the advert is as curious as fuck.  "Government recommend use of digital registered installers."  If you can make any sense of that, then have a biscuit!

Patio
The building firm features in its advert a quote from a satisfied customer.  "We are very pleased with the finished result."  I am somewhat confused by this claim; was there a half-time score?  Are there other forms of 'results' which are not final?  Outcome/consequence/effect = result.  Well done, Mike, for building the patio.  I am pleased that your customers were happy once you'd finished the result!

Sports Club
Apparently on Fridays there is a Dart's League.  That's right, greengrocer syndrome stikes again, with plurals requiring an apostrophe.  Pathetic.  It's a wonder the header didn't state Sport's Club.  There's also mention of under 18's.  Arrrghhhh!

Residents
There's a wonderful note below the name of the residents association.  "The next meeting will be at 7pm on 7th June in the upstairs meeting room of St Peters Church.  Agenda will include several items of local concern."  I should fucking well hope so.  That says nothing!  That's no better than saying the Pigeon Fanciers' Club will meet on Thursday, and there will be mention of pigeons.

Driveways
The sales pitch for EcoDrives is wonderful.  The first bullet point staes: "They ward of weeds".  I think it was meant to say "off".  Further down it says "Most jobs fitted in one day" but you can't really fit a job, can you?  Elsewhere, the ProBound advert for driveways also likes this approach: "Work fitted in a day".  I suspect that it will be a day's work that fits into one day.

Pizza
The opening times on this advert are, in my opinion, unhelpful.  Sunday - Wednesday 4.30pm till late.  Thursday - Saturday 4.30pm till 4am.  So, what exactly does 'late' mean?  Clearly the place opens at 4.30pm every day of the week.  As for closing, I am confused.  Surely 4am is late?  Or is that early?  Does the manager make it up as he goes along, but commit to 4am for three of the days?

WindowFix
With a name like this, I fully expect the company to fix windows, and it does.  Sadly the bullet points are not given correctly.  After the "We Replace" preface, there are eleven points that do not all follow the necessary convention.  Clearly no one has thought to say "We replace" in front of each bullet point and see if it makes sense.  Here are some that don't -

We replace UPVC repairs to windows
We replace we reseal windows and remove mouldy silicone
We replace we renew lead above bow windows
We replace door barrels replaced
We replace hinges replaced

The right side of the advert seems to include some contradictions, considering the company's name.  In the first paragraph, we're told it specialises in flat roofs.  Further, the opening line probably means flat roofs are reconstructed to make them sloping, rather than covered in pitch.  "We convert flat roofs into pitch roofs" should really state "pitched".  The rest of the poor English includes: "We specialise in flat roofs which covers porches, dormers, garages, extensions and balconies which is done in a glass reingorced polyester system."  Make of that what you will.

Valet
It seems the window people are not alone in failing to understand the concept of a bullet point list after an initial proposition.  Here we go again, for the points after "We offer:" which in effect means the following -

We offer use eco-friendly products
We offer specialise in motorhomes caravans and boats
We offer executive/prestige/corporate vehicle cleaning/valeting undertaken
We offer pick up and drop off service available
We offer  f  find us on facebook

Theatre
"The Cherry Orchard Doors and Bar 7pm Curtain up 7.30pm" is exactly the way one event is announced.  Only through consideration of other items on the bill does one come to realise that despite the single font and same boldness for all words on the one line, and unnecessary capitals for Bar and Curtain, the performance is "The Cherry Orchard".  Shitty typesetting, then.  Further down, I think I've got the hang of if, after reading "Brass Neck Comedy Club Doors and Bar 7pm Curtain Up 8pm, even thou Up has a capital 'U' this time.  I am intrigued by the possibility of an Icelandic contingent within the population of North Yorkshire, after seeing that the local Film Society is showing 'The Devil's Island (Icelandic with subtitles).  I do not believe there's much call for a film in Icelandic for speakers of the language, and so I should fucking well hope there are some subtitles.  The fact that there are subtitles means I don't really care that the film is in Icelandic, because I'll be reading English.  The film the week before is not subtitled.  My Week with Maryiln.  No that is not a typo by me - it really does read that way.  Now, the 'with' really ought to have a capital 'w' because otherwise it's a film call My Week and it features Marilyn ( for that is who I think was supposed to be mentioned - unless Maryiln is Icelandic for Marilyn.  I am still unsure though as to whether we're perhaps talking of Monroe, who's starring.  Or, someone (unnamed) is spending a week with someone else called Marilyn or the Icelandic equivalent).  Anyway, it was shown on 31st May so it's all irrelevant now, and I'll never know.

Family Fun Day
The type face and purple print are not easy to read, and this led to my reading of one of the lines in a way that is perhaps not normally associated with fun days and events/rides aimed at children.  Initially it did look like (and the first word is NOT 'Thai') - "Try Boxing, Bowls, Climb the Wall & Ride the Fucking Bronco.

Training
Driver CPC courses are available.  The courses are apparently "flexible and available weekdays, evenings and weekends to work around business needs."  So, to recap, then , whenever you fucking like.  The plural of NVQ is NVQs and not NVQ's.

There's further mayhem on the same pafe, on another advert for training.  "A briiliant training facility is based in the Business Centre, who offers training to clients both locally and throughout the UK."  This nonsense if followed by mix and match, regarding whethere the company is singular or plural, and then appears the wonderful line: "Having previously worked in the food industry Tom has experience in all aspects of training."  I never realised that working in the food industry automatically meant experience of training would be so comprehensive!  Absolute tosh.

Carpets

Oh dear!  The full page advert contains stuff that seems to have come about after a chat with someone at the roller shutter doors.  The style and content is a mess.  "8 choices of colour" is not right.  I have one choice, but I may choose from a range that includes 8 different colours.  Why not just stick with "A choice of 8 colours" which is the proper way to present the information?  Simlarly, "Lots more choice in stock" is simply bollocks.  I think someone at this firm is rather obsessed with choice and likes it to form the thrust of every supposed benefit of dealing with the company.  "We are probably one of the largest stockists of rolls in the town."  orry, but I reckon Greggs will beat you on that one.  There's me thinking that you stocked carpet!  "If your flooring is not in stock we will order it for you."  That's not a fucking benefit or perk, that's fucking essential if you're going to be selling anything!  To be fed this line as some sore of service feature is mad.  "Prices that are more than competitive."  Hmmmmm . . . tell me, then, how exactly is a price more than competitive?  How much more?  Nonesense.  "The service can include uplifting and removal of old flooring."  Make your mind up on the language - it's either uplift and removal, or uplifting and removing (and drop the 'of').  Finally, because I don't want to raise too much, we have a sentence that reads: "We have lots of remnant carpets and vinyls in store from room size to bathrooms."  So, I deduce from this that bathrooms are not rooms, and that the size of a bathroom is in no way comparible to the size of other rooms in a house, and needs separate classification.  Nore nonsense.

OTHER GENERAL ERRORS

  • Credit Unions are a not-for-profit organisation, offering savings and loans for all their members.
  • He went to their offices and then onto a collection point.
  • Sole traders and companies cross the North East are among the victims of the shortfall.
  • An army of dedicated walkers are getting ready for a hike on June 3rd.
  • Slow roast for 2-3 hours until meat is falling of bone.
  • The association will be holding their next meeting on Wednesday 13th June.
  • Whatever meal anyone at group wants to know about, Ann has a great recipe that she's already tried from one of our cook books to suggest.
  • All staff will continue to carry identity badges so they can be formerly identified.
Finally, here's a little bit from the piece entitled "Home Decor" with the sub-title "This Month Go Green".  It makes wonderful (wonderfully awful) reading.

Refresh you home withgreen, the most spirited and eco-chic colour.  Because green is a colour you find in nature, it actually works well with just about any colour, making it a nice alternative to grey or brown.  Jus about any green can look sophisticated - it's all about how the colours are presented and how much of them are used.  For a subtler use of green you can put lots of greens together.

It goes on, in cloud cuckoo land for a bit longer.  There's a small box below the writing, with an advert for decorating services, seemingly by the same person who wrote this shit.  I somehow think I'll not be outsourcing my painting.  I wonder if next month it'll be "Go Blue".  After all, the sky is blue and part of nature, so it goes with just about everything.

6.6.12 England Squad Euros 2012

So, let's just recap then on the England squad that will be attending the European Championships, and see what we can make of the line-up.

England squad:

Goalkeepers - Joe Hart, Robert Green, Jack Butland.
Defenders - Leighton Baines, Martin Kelly, Ashley Cole, Glen Johnson, Phil Jones, Joleon Lescott, John Terry, Phil Jagielka.
Midfielders - Stewart Downing, Steven Gerrard (captain), Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Scott Parker, Theo Walcott, Ashley Young.
Strikers - Andy Carroll, Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck.

Let's all agree first off that goalkeeping is hardly much of an issue.  Whether your name is Roy Hodgson, Catweasel or Rumplestiltskin, you'd have chosen Joe Hart plus two fairly irrelevant others.

In defence, we have Baines, who most of the time is okay.  Gary Cahill is now crocked, so Martin Kelly has been called up.  Obviously there can be no turning back by Roy, after his "I'm going to make a point" approach to Rio Ferdinand.  How the hell he can sleep at night having included John Terry over Ferdinand, and now to deny him again by going for Kelly as Cahill's replacement is inexplicable.  John Terry, as we have established numerous times, ought to be in solitary confinement, not on a football pitch wearing an England shirt.  Glen Johnson is sometimes quite good, but more commonly shit.  Hang on, he plays for the mightily successful Liverpool team (that's sarcasm, folks).  Jones and Lescott will do, as will Jagielka.

Stewart Downing?  Hang on, he plays for the mightily successful Liverpool team (that's sarcasm, folks) and has managed no goals and no assists all season.  Excellent credentials for an England shirt.

Steven Gerrard?  Hang on, he plays for the mightily successful Liverpool team (that's sarcasm, folks) and has struggled like hell to make his mark for ages now.  Yes, he is 'passionate' and is a fugurehead etc, but - he's nowhere near as good as he used to be.

Jordan Henderson?  Hang on, he plays for the mightily successful Liverpool team (that's sarcasm, folks) and has struggled to make anything happen as part of the Downing-Carroll-Henderson trio that set Liverpool back a combined £75 million.  Frank Lampard is injured, although I was undecided about him anyway.  Meanwhile, James Milner is the donkey of the squad; generally quite useful, but never sparkling; generally average, never astounding.  On that basis, it's unsurprising then for him to be in an England shirt!

Oxlade-Chamberlain is okay, and whether he scores or not, I do like seeing a player have the confidence to run forward and attack, and spend rather less time passing backwards and sideways, which is the curse of the modern game and creating fucking triangles for the sake of it.  Walcott was, once upon a time, of a similar disposition to O-C.  He does retain some of those qualities, but we never seem to see him make the best use of his speed.  Okay as a sub.

Scott Parker will run a lot, and link up with everyone on the field.  I am not sure that he ever gets any decent results, but he does seem to have an immense work rate, so I'll give him a nod [but please don't get sent off, Scott, through your eagerness to challenge].

Ashley Young?  No, this lightweight is only ever a goalscorer through some luck, whether poor defending helps him out, or a lucky flick results in a goal.  He is not good enough.  Of course, an opponent sneezing will make him hit the deck and claim a penalty or free-kick.  Diver!

Andy Carroll?  Hang on, he plays for the mightily successful Liverpool team (that's sarcasm, folks) and has struggled like hell to make his mark for ages now.  Liverpool paid £35million for this bloke, and must be miffed that it was a bad deal.  How, then, does he get a place in an England team?

Wayne Rooney - not available for two games because of his own stupidity.  Has everyone forgotten why the depleted national side is in a tight spot?  If we don't get past the group stage, his past actions and resultant ban will become a talking point again.  Meanwhile Welbeck is joining in, and I don't mind seeing a newcomer have a go.  Defoe is only good at nicking a goal as a sub.

So, the above is the cream of English talent and will represent the country at Euro 2012.  I give us little chance of doing well, especially with such a large Liverpool contingent.  I envisage pain/agony/angst/frustration gripping all viewers, and a realisation that what should be classified as 'disbelief' will actually be so believable.  The word 'disappointed' will be banded about, along with 'disappointment', 'disappoint' and 'disappointing'.  Bring it on!

England to win - 14/1  [Coral]
England to win - 140/1 [TMWSC]
Quotes after each England game - any three from the following - Evens:

"We need to pick ourselves up" (Roy)
"There are some positives to take from the game" (Roy)
"We're very disappointed not to have come away with more" (Roy)
"We need to concentrate on the next game and make sure we do better" (Roy)
"We still have a chance and we'll be working very hard to take it" (Roy)
"Yes, it was very unfortunate" (Roy)
"No I don't regret bringing John Terry" (Roy)
"You can't legislate for that sort of thing" (Roy)

6.6.12 Record Price Reduction

Unfortunately it's not perhaps the news you were hoping to hear, because the price reduction I'm talking about is a 'record' inasmuch as it's paltry!

The Co-operative store has surpassed itself with the latest pathetic use of orange sticky labels affixed to items which are reduced.  The most common cause for such labels being printed and stuck over products' bar codes is that the sell-by date is looming.  Occasionally there are reductions to clear the last few items on a range that's to be discontinued.  However, usually the local store is littered with orange stickers on account of no fucker being able to forecast sales and determine the right quantity of anything when it comes to ordering.

All of this leads me to the record breaking price change applied to Heinz Tomato Ketchup - the one with the blue label, with less sugar, less salt and less taste.

The amazement that came my way when I saw the reduction was quite unexpected, and of a flavour altogether unprecedented.  The mark-down was a penny !!!

I do not expect this feat of astounding commerce to be bettered any time soon, and so I award the Cunt-op an Olympic Gold for this fantastic clearance offer.

5.6.12 Annoyances and Comfort Breaks

Nat West

On the TV advert, the daughter is off travelling around the world, and we see her drop some money in the far east.  In her gap year, the temporary gap in her finances is filled by her doting father who receives a phone call from his distraught daughter.  Somehow she contrived to drop her money and nothing else, so she had her cashpoint card, and was able to withdraw the £1500 her dad transfered to her account in a matter of half a nanosecond.  All this is very twee, and whilst any father would want to help his child, it's all rather middle-class and convenient that he is able to do so without a care in the world.  I know this because at the end of the advert, he's walking along the street drinking a coffee and he smiles to himself on seeing a NatWest sign.  Yes, mate, what a hoot!  Good old NatWest, eh?  Helpful Banking - from the arseholes that fucked up big time and lost billions.

Strikes

I would like to point out that we are in 21st century, and that these days, workers' rights are not quite as tested as they were in the days of workhouses.  The is a national minimum wage, ludicrously high and freely available benefits, legislation to protect employees, and health & safety measures that are now extreme to the point of stupidity.  It is therefore unlikely that the need to strike is desperate enough to demand walkouts - and yet we have now, in the middle of the toughest economic claimate for ages, groups of workers desperate to stop working.  Doctors (yes, the ones whose wages averate £100,000 and who will averagely have a pension of £49,000 per year upon retirement) are pissed off and are holding a day of action.  Teachers are equally prepared to strike.  Tube workers in some areas are up for it as well.  The tanker drivers threatened to strike recently, and their dispute is still not resolved.  Driving examiners are at it, as are employees of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.  There will be more, of course.  It seems not to matter that the country is penniless, and it seems not to matter that the demands of these mainly public sector workers are out of synch with the private sector.  Vital services being disrupted is hardly helpful to the country, the economy, or other citizens.  There is no basis for striking, and I have no sympathy for anyone who wants to withhold labour/services and cost other people time, money and effort, plus inconvenience thousands - all for self-serving reasons.

Holland

The European Championships start on Friday.  I have seen one TV trailer which primed me with details of a game featuring The Netherlands.  I am sorry, but after decades of the team being called 'Holland', I cannot now switch to The Netherlands.

TV Competitions

The use of 'competition' is unwarranted in just about every example of a lottery that accompanies a TV programme these days.  It is obligatory for programmes to include the chance to win something or other, and to make the process fall outside of lottery regulations, it is necessary to make things involve skill - apparently.  As a result, we are given pathetic questions so that in effect, we are invited to buy a chance of winning for £1 plus the cost of a text message, or in some cases, much more.  In recent editions of '60 Minute Makeover', where people have their homes tarted up, we've had questions like: What does DIY stand for?  A  Done In Yellow  B  Do It Yourself  C  Did It Yesterday.  There was also this one:

According to a line from the film and the song, there's no place like:
A  Oz
B  Kansas
C  Home

Kelly Brook

Does anyone understand why Kelly Brook seems to feature in the newspapers so regularly, when she does fuck all?  There are numerous photographs confirming her pointlessness, and I want to know whose idea it was to follow her every move.

Guilty Pleasure

The term 'Guilty Pleasure' should be banned from all television broadcasts, newspapers and radio.  There is no circumstance where use of the term is permissible.  It is one of the most nauseating, annoying, pathetic and manufactured pair of words ever thought of, and has no place in society.

Roy Hodgson

The team managed to beat two teams in a row, by the amazing scoreline of 1-0.  Yes, we took out Norway in a boring match, and last week managed to beat Belgium.  It's all very well to be pleased with winning friendly matches, but to do so is completely pointless unless there's some progress that will pay off in a competition.  Danny Welbeck scored a goal, and whilst he took his chance well, it was made easier for him by the goalie, who need not have come off his line.  A covering defender was challenging, and I could have stopped the ball myself if I were on the goal line.  So, rather lucky then, that the goal came about.  If it had finished 0-0 then that would have been slightly more testing for Roy.  So often we seem to miss the point, and winning does us no service at all in friendly matches unless we play well and win!

Patrice Evra

It seems cameras caught him wiping his arse with the national team shirt.  Yes, unbelievably, he sat on the bench as a sub in the France v Serbia game last week, and was messing about with the poorest taste imaginable.  The manager of the national team should oust him immediately, and he should not be allowed to play for France again.  What a horrible nob, and this demonstrates everything obnoxious about present day overpaid footballers who do not respect their good fortune.

Islington

A £1.8milliom house is being renovated at taxpayers' expense.  It has five bedrooms, a games room and a large basement.  It has a 40ft garden, three bathroom suites and a massive kitchen.  It comes with access to a residents-only play area, that even has a basketball court.  The property in Granville Square WC1 is most definitely in a sought-after area, where the rent on a one-bedroom flat is about £1200 per month.  It's amazing therefore that the tennants of the large property will be paying just £1000 per month - and that's from benefits!  Islington Cuntin Council is moving in a family with four kids and one on the way, to display perfectly the utter lunacy of housing policy, councils and the UK being fucked up.  The property would be able to fetch £8000 per month in the open market.  So, a lucky family gets it free (well, the housing benefit of £1000 is used up on it) while other local residents work their bollocks off to maintain properties a quarter of the size.  MADNESS.

Co-op Doors

The Un-Co-operative has extended its non-co-operation to the automatic sliding door that moves when sensors pick up motion on either side.  Walking into the Co-op now involves, if one is not careful, walking into it literally - into the fucking door.  There must be something in this that proves the Cunt-op is targeting old people.  Whilst the older shoppers probably have more difficulty in working out the extent to which they are being ripped off on pricing, they are at least able to gain entry without any perceivable problem.  The speed at which the large glass door slides out of the way is perfect for anyone using a zimmer frame or wearing 'comfy shoes'.  Anyone with a spritely step will batter the fucking glass, or find his/her blood pressure rising (notwithstanding the loss of blood that now renders the glass smeared with red) before stepping inside the place, let alone after inspecting the cost of eggs.  [£1.89 for 10, for the smallest cheapest shittiest ones, so 19p each as opposed to 10p in Asda, but 70p each for the big, free-range hand-packed, ethically watched, limousine carried, pampered other ones on the shelf].

Sofa Study

A US research team has reached a fantastic conclusion after a study involving 204 adults, who all had bad health habits.  They were all paid to get off their sofas, exercise and adopt a better diet.  The researchers found that watching less TV, eating more veg and exercising can have a dramatic effect on your health.  Not fucking shit, Sherlock!

Bathroom

In the northeast, there's a TV reporter called Juliet Barthram.  Unfortunately the pronunciation in the northeast is identical to that for 'bathroom'.  I suggest that Juliet moves to the south, where she will more easily escape the link - I suggest not moving to Looe, though.

Need To Pee

There is a weird custom now, whereby people in control of meetings have adopted the phrase "comfort break" when announcing that there will be a chance for those desperate for a piss to go and have one.  On breakfast TV the other day, one of the two muppets on the sofa asked a guest (an expert on etiquette) what one should do when in a queue, but in need of a comfort break.  TWAT!  No way is it proper use of language to suggest that someone in a queues who has been waiting for a while might need a "comfort break" !!!  Fucking poncy euphemisms and gobbledygook should be banned.

...

5.6.12 Jubilee and Bond

I noticed in the TV listings for last week a programme on BBC2 at 7.30pm which was detailed as follows:

Diamond Jubilee - The Queen on TourJennie Bond reports on the Queen's recent trip to the southwest of England as part of the Diamond Jubilee Tour.

I didn't know that Jennie Bond was still active, and am quite sure that she would have preferred the TV listing to have read:

The Queen reports on Jennie Bond's recent trip to the southwest of England as part of the Diamond Jubilee Tour.

At the weekend, the TV was on as Mrs MWSC watched a lot of boats making their way up the Thames.  The BBC seemed to have roped in hoards of people to 'report' on the event, and it seems OTT.  Few had very much to say that was original/needed/purposeful.  As ever, there was much jumping from one person to the next, so that we could be asked to "Look at that!" and hear the comment "What a marvellous spectacle" from each person elected to tell us nothing.  For some reason, Ben Fogle was in a rowing boat, and was reporting for the BBC to no effect or benefit.  What was weird was the presence of Clare Balding on the leading boat (Gloriana) as there must surely have been enough for the rowers to do without dealing with extra weight.  She managed to ask Steve Redgrave something pointless while he was rowing and slightly puffing, and I wondered whether she ought to be elsewhere, chasing a beagle or smoking a horse, or shearing sheep.

Her pointlessness could not match that of the reporter who at lunchtime on Saturday had visited Scotland to talk to people having a street party.  In front of some tables, and people holding Union Flags, he posed a question to a woman.  I realised I had not misheard.

"What's the purpose of this party, do you think?" must be one of the all time most stupid questions, considering the circumstances.

I am not saying all the acts on the concert tonight were awful, just most of them.  Much worse than the singers (I'll come to them in a  minute) were the useless people introducing them, and allegedly trying to be funny.  The worse offender by far was the seriously UNFUNNY and hopeless Lenny Henry.  Please, someone at the BBC, can you own up to being the twat who thought him suitable for a slot introducing anything, and being even more stupid to let him come out with comments that were dire.  His main talent seems to be as a cheerleader, with "Everybody say 'Yeah'" and not just the once either.  He used this approach [something that would be embarrassing at a primary school party] repeatedly.  Then it got worse, and even more inappropriate -

All the black folks say 'Yeah'.  [That silenced the crowd completely]
All three of us, let's fight.  [Nothing]

Lenny, call it a day, a year, a career and go now.

Others were not quite so stupid, unfunny or inappropriate.  Maybe one of them at a time, or simply lame in their efforts to come up with links and funny comments.  I will not mention them because life is too short.  As for the singers, well, variable.

I know it is apparently compulsory to wheel out certain people at events like these, and so Elton John, Cliff Richard and Paul McCartney were fielded; they were collectively like a human traffic light.

Elton, Green - he was okay.  His voice has lost something these days, but never mind, because there's no doubt he's a star.

Cliff, Amber - he was pretty awful, moved about like Kate Bush on acid, and revealed he's lost the plot a bit.  I think he ought to be kept under house arrest in his house in Barbados.  He is excused to some degree because for some reason he was liked by enough people [I've never worked out who they are, though].

Paul, Red - he was shite.  He wailed, looked like a corpse, sang like one, and basically traded off a history that was one of putting nursery rhymes to music in the sixties.  This awful formulaic offering was truly embarrassing.  I was for the most part watching "Quantum of Solace" on the other side, to save me from this "Omission of Talent" on BBC1.

Truly Awful - and retirement is overdue by three decades

We'd already had Lang Lang playing the music from the Galaxy advert, and Alfie Boe singing the Cornetto song.  The latter was so bad it was cringeworthy, especially when he got all 'rock 'n' roll' about it.  Everybody loves Kylie (it's compulsory) so even though she is not a good singer, she's accepted.  Tom Jones did what Tom Jones does.  Meanwhile Grace Jones sang while keeping her hula hoop going for the whole song.

I have no idea whether it was all good live, and whether the atmosphere made up for the mixed quaility of the performances.  Diamonds Are Forever, but Shirley Bassey certainly isn't - she was pretty weak.  However, the weakest thing of the whole evening was Cheryl Cole's voice; what an embarrassment.  Do us all a favour and stop pretending to be a singer, and stick to beauty products where you might just be 'worth it', as opposed to being 'worthless' in the music world.  Robbie was not much cop, and what the fuck anyone has to do to escape Will.i.am I just don't know.  The guy is everywhere; could someone at the Foreign Office take away his visa and send him home.  His singing (can we legitimately call it that?) was atrocious - it's a wonder Stevie didn't punch him in the nuts.

Anyway, I was happy catching odd bits of the concert in the breaks, as I thought a further viewing of James Bond would be more entertaining than the stuff on BBC1.  I think I was right.

4.6.12 Springwatch Unhinged

Last week, for the first time ever, I saw Springwatch and the Springwatch Unsprung (haha) offering that followed immediately afterwards.  What a pile of complete shit.  Patronising to the extreme, the presenters fed us little bits of information as though the audience consisted of four-year-olds.  This was dumbed down to the point of agony for anyone whose mind was more active than a pile of dead leaves covered by a tarpaulin.  Chris Packham has the personality of a tree trunk, and Martin Hughes-Games looked rather creepy, dressed in his barbour coat.  One can generally forgive Michaela Strachan anything, because she is and always has been the animal woman.

The format was weak, and the style of delivery for very little news was excruciatingly poor.  I could no more listen to Chris Packham than I could stomach eating prunes for a year solid - which is an oxymoronic, close to a description of the server.  I have seen reference to CP being referred to as the "housewife's heartthrob", and if there any females who endorse this description, then they must be very sad individuals.

I will not be watching ever again.  Actually, the programme came on after something else and I never bothered to switch over.  My education was completed over a drawn-out nature lesson where the presenters seemed to delight in things dying, and in making an effort to justify their jobs.  Why the fuck does the BBC need to pay three people to present this stuff?  I so resent my licence fee being dished out to twats in anoraks who tell me very little about what I could find out for myself if I were inclined.

Springwatch, and then Springwatch Unsprung.  I would so have loved an opportunity to follow these two with Springwatch Unhinged, a comedy 'spoof' version.
