26.2.17 No Pot of Joy at ASDA
The tactics at ASDA are a fucking disgrace. This week I had on my list some loo roll, and was disgusted to see that the shelves were devoid of anything other than Shades, the ASDA own-brand. Not a cunting roll of Kleenex was on sale, or Andrex. I suspected foul play and this view was enhanced with my visit yesterday. The toothpaste available was limited to just Colgate and Oral-Cuntin-B, and one small version of Sensodyne. Clearly there are backhanders in place for pushing certain lines.
It is most annoying that aside from the small Co-op, the nearest supermarket to me is ASDA, and it is fast becoming a source of fucking fury. A week ago, a box of 20 cans of Carlsberg was on offer at £10. This was after a recent drop from £13, a price which had held for a couple of months following a long stint at £11. I went to pick up a box on Thursday evening and found it was on sale at fucking £15.00! What the fucking fuck? Shopping at ASDA is like playing the cuntin stock market, and prices fluctuate more speedily and erratically than and index in existence. This is exemplified by the commodities prices, and specifically yoghurt.
Activia is definitely a substance that fluctuates more than most, and whether it is simple variations in supply and demand that forces the ups and downs in ASDA pricing, or some sort of yoghurt cartel [a dairy equivalent of OPEC] that sets the barrel price of yoghurt is something that needs clarification. What is clear, though, is that there is some piss-taking. It is unlikely to be Danone making the running - rather, it will be ASDA arsing about. A four-pack of Activia has for the last three months jumped around in price, between a low of £1.00 and a high of £2.40. This is outrageous. As for Pot of Joy, it is indeed 'joyful' when available at £1.00, but for every week it is sold at that price, it spend six weeks on the shelf above a price tag of fucking £2.00. On those weeks the product would be better named as Pot of Mild Amusement.
The 400ml bottle of Nivea cream was back up to £6 yesterday, from its offer price of £4. ASDA's buying power is clearly inferior to that of Bodycare, where it's sold at a standard rate of £2. Peperami packs were in the mid-range position, £1.50 in the general spread of £1.00 to £2.50. Meanwhile, Pringles are up 25p.

19.2.17 S-Factor: Smugness
The contenders for S-Factor are all desperate to win the title, and if you want to vote for your favourite, then the numbers will come up at the end of the review.
Alastair Stewart manages to squint and deliver a smug, patronising commentary on things, whether related to 'Police, Camera, Action' or his more recent gig, 'Unbelievable Moments Caught On Camera'. His precious, laboured manner and mincing style of delivering tripe is worthy of a place on the leader board. In his most recent TV offering, he relayed details of an accident on the mountain, and a rescue that followed. Avalanche was pronounced more than once - as "Avalonshsh". What a cuntish fucking offensive utterance.
Victoria Coren Mitchell hosts the quiz show Only Connect. The format of the quiz is interesting, and challenging. The budget for this programme is obviously miniscule, and apart from VCM's wages, the expenses amount to covering the research and paying a cameraman. Her annoying tone when posing questions, and uttering prepared claptrap combines to display smugness at an excruciating level. This is enhanced by a real inability to be 'clever' with smart comments; her wittering is proof to any listener that whatever she thinks of herself, she is simply not entertaining, and NOT funny in the least. If there is a scriptwriter in the budget, then he/she should be shot.
Kevin McCloud must without question be included in anyone's top five, with a smugness level that blows the roof off. His manner is outrageous at times. and he feels entitled to create monologues that are nauseating. Someone needs to tell him that he is not Shakespeare, and that his pompous preaching is out of order. Get over yourself, Kevin.
Giles Coren, sibling, of Victoria, was equally annoying when he fronted the quiz show 500 Questions. The prissy way he posed the questions and generally delivered his lines was irritating int he extreme. Whenever he appears, I find myself grating my teeth. I have no idea why he is indulged at all, and as is the case with all of the contenders on S-Factor, there is an air of entitlement.
To vote for your favourite, phone the emergency services and plead for his/her instant removal from the world of television.

8.1.17 Let It Shine
Saturday night television has hit a new low. It was looking bad enough after ITV bought The Voice UK and we were all set to be served the usual painful shit but with numerous annoying adverts as well. I resolved that I'd not be wasting any energy on this damp squib of a show, and the gurning judges who would annoy us all much more than the contestants and their deluded families. I had not counted on BBC1 coming in with a more nausea-inducing load of shite than I could have imagined.
I find myself commenting now without having actually watched the rubbish. This is, in my opinion, the very best move I could have made; why? Let's look at the evidence. Aside from the pathetically boring trailers aired by the BBC in recent weeks, I had little specific knowledge of the show, until I read the brief feature in my TV guide yesterday morning. I will use the details to relay my thoughts.
The concept is of course weaker than an holistic remedy. Let me quote the premise as detailed by Elaine Penn in TV Choice.
The BBC may have lost The Voice but they're [sic] pinning all their [sic] hopes on Let It Shine, a new talent show aiming to find five individuals to create a pop group for Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald's new stage show featuring the songs of Take That.
Really? Just how cunting boring a search could someone dream up? Nothing as awful as this one, for sure. A talent show to find members of a boy band to regurgitate on stage the warblings of Barlow & Co. Dire indeed! What is this weird obsession with fucking stage shows and musicals?
The musical is called The Band, and we want them to have all the youthfulness and energy we had when we started in 1990. Seeing young people on a stage is exciting," says Gary, 45.
By this stage I had already resolved to go nowhere near the farcical effort. "Seeing young people on stage is exciting" (said Thomas The Tank Engine) and I heard Barlow uttering this in my head. Learning that Mel Giedroyc was involved was further motivation to miss it. As for a show called The Band, I have no need, thank you.
So what kind of person impresses Gary? "personality is massive. When they come on, the spark has to be turned on and people have to be entertained."
How dare he say "personality is massive" when he has none of his own.

1.1.17 Festive My Arse
On 30th December 2015 I recorded details on the use of the word 'festive' in the television guide. Last year's TV guide was the one provided by the Daily Mail. This year I have referred to TV Choice while performing a similar exercise. Looking at the use of 'festive' in the descriptions of programmes, I see that again the peak of usage comes on Christmas Eve.
Above is the graph for last year, with the total per day shown by the green line. The channel breakdown revealed little of interest except that the BBC was less festive than the commercial channels.
Above is a comparison for the patterns year on year. The slightly higher numbers reflect a slightly increased use of the term on the main channels, but there are a few entries from other channels in the TV guide. The patterns are not dissimilar, and this is surprising considering that two very different publications have provided the input/data.
Overall, I conclude that the use of the word 'festive' is as annoying this year as it was last year.

31.12.16 Skelton Zoo
In April 2011 I found it necessary to post something after a visit to Middlebrough Zoo. Middlesbrough of course does not have a zoo . . . well, officially. Such was my amazement at the visit to Asda, I was driven to record the experience. With somewhat lesser enthusiasm and obligation, I now find that I am writing once more after a brief visit to Asda. Not that I have avoided this establishment for posts in the interim; no, the Asda experience is one that recurs and thus haunts any sane human.
Today's excursion was intended to be perfunctory in nature, as a means to invest the minimum effort and attention whilst securing essential goods. I knew it would be less than successful at the entrance. The car I was following decided that the painted-on mini roundabout needed a wide girth - so much cuntin so that I feared it was circumnavigating the country! It swung back into line, just as Apollo 13 managed to gain momentum from a swing around the moon, and I followed it into the car park. The cunt suddenly stopped on the bend, and then decided to indicate right. In this way, I was informed that the twat was entering the parking lane that was suppose to be unavailable as an option. The No Entry sign fell on blind eyes, just as my "fucking cunt!" fell on deaf ears.
Parking was easy, once I fended off the temptation of running down a woman intent on keeping to the centre of the aisle for cars. TMWSC Junior and I entered the zoo, and prepared to gather sustenance. We were met with the sight of three members of staff considering what should be done with three 65-inch Polaroid televisions. I of course knew the answer to this instantly, but decided not to avail them of my considered opinion. Instead, Junior and I edged past into the first aisle.
The TUC biscuits that were stacked a few days ago were now 50p instead of £1, signalling that Asda's presumption on the needs of the general public in respect of TUC biscuits was somewhat revised, and more in keeping with reasonable pricing. Whilst we 'trolleyed' past, I made a mental not to check on the TUC cheese sandwich variety in due course.
I went nowhere near the left-hand side of the store, which includes among many non-food items, the toiletries aisles. This was the location of my recent frustration at the Asda pricing policy, which in unofficial terms, is:
Confuse the fuckers as much as possible; chop and change pricing, as well as packet sizes, and always try to get away with robbery under the guide of rolling back prices.
The last time I was in the end aisle was to marvel at the 200ml Nivea cream being sold at £6. This is the exact same item available in other shops at £1.99. Anyway, enough of the non-food section, or I will find myself bemoaning the fact that Asda chooses not to sell Macleans toothpaste.
Junior and I were in the market for mince - pork mince to be specific. None was for sale, other than a variety that contained 20% fat, and of course that is only of real interest to desperate shoppers. The vegetable section presented itself, and sprouts were nowhere to be seen. Clearly the nation has just swallowed every cuntin sprout that an EU worker has picked over the last few weeks. Carrots were the only alternative to go with swede and leeks. It was at the end of the aisle that I felt homi-cuntin-cidal.
Junior and I were forced to take a long route to get round the bend. It was akin to the trajectory taken by the twat at the roundabout, on the way in. Four fat fuckers were chatting; their bulk and the two shopping trolleys were providing a real obstacle to progress. I tried to counter the centrifugal force by leaning towards the bulk of the last arse, and shaved it (metaphorically). I heard another fucker moan that "people just barge past rather than saying excuse me". These chitter-chatter-cunts were so out of order that if I'd have had the nerve, I'd have rammed them into the car park. However, I would have needed to be Hulk Hogan to have stood a chance of achieving that, and so I moved on from sumo city to the chickens.
After catching to chickens (I had the advantage because they were dead, trussed and bagged) the yoghurts beckoned, and Junior made his selection. Obviously I could not get any Activia yoghurts, on principle. At £2.40 for four little pots, I felt the need to abstain. These are of course the pots that are available on some weeks at £1, before reverting to £2.40 for no reason at all. Occasionally there is some sort of settling effect on the world stock markets, and the spot price for yoghurt allows a £2 sale price. However, in most cases, it's either £1 or £2.40. Fucking Asda!
I should point out, just for balance and in the interests of those who are not hooked solely on strawberry yoghurt, that the Cardbury's Pot of Joy 4-pack can vary in a similar way. At £2, I ignored them today, but two weeks ago I was able to indulge at £1, and select the 'pots of mild satisfaction'.
There was a kerfuffle at the end of one aisle when I wanted to leave it and turn the corner. an idiot has gone past but was now reversing, and another person was loitering without any idea of 'intent' as a concept, let alone as a reality. Basically, people were in the way, and unable to decide what to do. The Asda re-stocking trolley added more annoyance to the equation. Junior and I negotiated the situation with aplomb. At this point I became aware of a tribe of shoppers who spent more time on their mobiles than attending to the task of selecting food. Junior and I managed to choose aisles that were not at the same time inhabited by these numpties. The choice of black bin bags was strange;overpriced decent ones or shitty cheap ones. There was no middle ground at all.
After getting lager, it was time to find a checkout that would allow speedy exit from the establishment. This proved be be tricky. I first opted for a checkout that seemed likely to involve a minimal wait. One customer was just finishing packing and was almost ready to pay, and between me and him were the pair of women with a kid, the ones gabbing on phones I'd seen earlier. Unfortunately I had not counted on their ability to fuck about. Their shopping was split into multiple 'portions' and so spread on the checkout belt. I persevered though, because how long could they possibly delay me?
It seemed the answer was 'longer than I'd thought'. The killer moment came when I thought it was my turn to start putting food on to the conveyor belt, but then I saw another basket of food in the top of the stack of empties, ready to be loaded up. The fat fucker no doubt slipped it out of her snatch while I wasn't looking, because it materialised from nowhere . . . . well, from her twat, obviously. Junior and I moved to another line, and proceeded to put our purchased on to the belt.
Leaving the car park I was pleased to be out of the place. The fifteen minute escapade was more frustrating than necessary. To cap it off, I was forced to swerve on the way home after the car in front braked and swerved. It was avoiding a cunt who I saw had stopped rapidly and pulled up on to the kerb, all because he was on the phone. It would have been safer for all if he had actually driven while on the phone, rather than take ludicrous action after accepting a call.
What an unrewarding visit.
